From general management to business managers, innovation must be coupled with excellence in operations at the service of customers. By virtue of its position, the DSI can promote the emergence of these initiatives . The DSI will be able to quickly and efficiently assess the opportunity presented to it .
His permanent contact with service providers will also allow him to have a new vision of what can be beneficial to the company. Then he will know connect the actors of innovation .
His role will allow him to be proactive. He will be able to demonstrate the usefulness of AI in the sector he is targeting, while providing rational data as evidence.
We can therefore compare the DSI to a fertilizer, the one who brings artificial intelligence into the company and will be able to convince of the usefulness of the latter.
Observer // pilot role
Having given birth to artificial intelligence in the company, he will subsequently have a pilot role. It will have to clearly show the ROI in order to optimize the budget envelope of the IS. In particular, it will be possible for him to set up a monitoring platform to evaluate artificial intelligence.
He will have a privileged point of view to observe the impacts of AI on professions . Thus the DSI can quickly become a testing ground for AI. His technical knowledge and know-how can help him really understand the issues (dangers or opportunities) of such a change.
He will be able to more easily understand and anticipate future transformations, in order to prepare his teams for such changes. How share authority between AI and human ? How to approach this problem at the level of human resources.
The IT Department must be one step ahead. While keeping an eye on interesting new developments for his company, he must also anticipate the impact that AI will have on it.
Ensure cohesion and consistency
This, in my opinion, is the main role of the CIO. As seen above, it is the cross-functional position and the technical knowledge of the IT Department that will enable it to implement and effectively manage any innovation related to AI.
The educational role of the DSI
Few people are really informed about artificial intelligence. What we don’t know always scares us a little. Thus, in the company, artificial intelligence can appear as a gadget whose usefulness is not really understood. It is the DSI who must prove this usefulness . It is up to her to teach employees how to use this technology. It must popularize it to make it accessible to all. This can go through training, practical advice, recommendations… The human resources sector will be very useful to him at this level.
Once this work is completed, its role as a partner and coordinator of the various departments on AI topics (such as marketing, digital, human resources and finance) will be essential. It must ensure the constant consistency between the initiatives and the company’s strategy .
By linking different levels of the company, he will be able to highlight synergies that others cannot see. It is by working with multidisciplinary teams that he will really be able to allow AI to develop fully and efficiently in his company.
Ensure cohesion and consistency in the infrastructures put in place.
In order to implement an effective artificial intelligence solution, data and its infrastructure are essential. It is up to the DSI to perform this difficult task of making good choices of infrastructure architecture . Consistency between these infrastructures is essential.
It is at this time that the DSI will be able to highlight its technical and methodological skills. He must not only be connected to all the players in the company and their tools, but also know when it becomes necessary to call on a service provider.
Its technological choices must all converge towards a single point. The more the IS is centralized, the more it will bring satisfactory results.
The security of company data and technological infrastructures is a constant concern for CIOs. It is even more so in the face of the AI, even more so when it is he who put it in place. It has a catalytic role against the AI.
The DSI must be present from the POC in innovation projects concerning AI. He will be the only one who can guarantee the industrial viability of the solutions , their integration with the IS existing company and their cybersecurity .
Following the implementation of a coherent infrastructure architecture, he must ensure the security of the devices and also their compliance (ethics, GDPR, etc.).
Regarding the possible automation of professions , which may go as far as replacing professions, it will be up to the IT department to deal with these ethical subjects and prepare human resources for these changes.
Machine learning has a “black box” aspect that does not have to be complete. Indeed, the IT Department must ensure that at least one team of experts is able to understand and explain the reasoning. In particular, he can decide to randomly delete variables in order to better understand the impact of these on the results.
